The classic since 2019: an overview

THE URBAN TRAVELLER is the classic bike backpack for the Brompton folding bike, part of the LUMABAG range since 2019. Each one is sewn to order in Uwe Arndt’s Bremen workshop. On the bike it hangs in the front carrier block. It holds 22 to 30 litres and weighs 1.25 kg. Waxed cotton forms the shell, Cordura lines the inside, and a padded compartment takes 13 to 15 inch laptops.

Waxed cotton shell, Cordura lining

Two fabrics define THE URBAN TRAVELLER. Waxed cotton is the shell material: cotton weave carrying a film of wax that repels water. A Scottish mill refines the cloth. Light lines appear where the fabric was folded while being turned right side out. Such creases are part of waxed cotton. Inside sits a Cordura lining. The nylon carries a coating on one side and has proved itself in outdoor gear. The base of the bag holds a piece of recycled bicycle tyre. The tyre pattern turns out differently on every bag and makes each Urban Traveller unique.

Mount, pack, close: how the backpack works

The front carrier block from Brompton is the fitting that holds a bag and its frame at the front of the bike. A matching bag frame ships with the backpack, while Brompton sells the carrier block itself. To close the pack, roll the top down and press the Fidlock magnetic buckle shut. A side pocket with a water-repellent YKK zip takes phone and keys. Loxx is the fastener that pins the loose strap end to the top of the backpack and keeps it away from the spokes. You set the strap length to fit your body. On longer rides, you can tuck the shoulder straps into a sleeve on the back panel. Inside, a padded laptop compartment for 13 to 15 inch laptops sits next to two flat pockets. On its own, THE URBAN TRAVELLER weighs 1.25 kg, and the bag frame takes it to 1.55 kg. Volume runs from 22 to 30 litres, and the dimensions are H 34 to 59 × W 33 × D 20 cm. Sewing starts after your order: allow approx. 2 to 3 weeks for delivery.

Lighter than the Bromfort: what sets the Urban Traveller apart

1.25 kg versus 1.5 kg: the Urban Traveller is the lighter pick, while the Bromfort from LUMABAG offers more storage. Both share the dimensions of H 34 to 59 × W 33 × D 20 cm and mount on the same front carrier block. The Bromfort adds padded shoulder straps and an extra front pocket. That makes the Urban Traveller the light base model and the Bromfort the option for a full commuter load.

Designed in Bremen for everyday urban rides

LUMABAG has sold THE URBAN TRAVELLER since 2019, and the design comes from Bremen, built around daily Brompton rides. A quick stop at the chemist, across the park, then into the library: the backpack hangs on the bike instead of on your back. Your back stays free and dry while you ride. Once you get off, the Urban Traveller comes along as a backpack. One bag replaces both the bike bag and the everyday rucksack.

Three questions about THE URBAN TRAVELLER

Which colours does THE URBAN TRAVELLER come in?

LUMABAG sews the Urban Traveller in five colours: Black, Denim, Otter Green, Scarlett and Tan. Every colour uses the same waxed cotton with the Cordura lining.

Where do the straps go while riding?

Press the loose strap end into the Loxx fastener at the top, and it stays clear of the spokes. For longer rides, the sleeve on the back panel takes the shoulder straps as well.

Does THE URBAN TRAVELLER keep rain out?

The wax film on the cotton sheds rain, so the backpack stays water-repellent. To renew the layer, there is the LUMABAG wax tin.

    Klasse Tasche! Endlich ein Brompton Rücksack, der gross genug ist. Liegt gut bei Tragen und am Trägerblock.
    Befestigung der Gurte ist bei original Brompton Metro etwas bequemer. Aber Metro ist einfach viel zu klein und braucht eine Schutzhülle bei Regen.
    Hatte Jahre lang Carradice Tasche und wollte immer ein Rücksack haben.
    Dieses ist besser als Carradice und bequemer.

    Ich habe den Rücksack ca. einem Jahr und es ist mein Standardrücksack geworden wenn ich unterwegs mit meinem Brompton bin (bzw. fast jeden Tag). Viel passt rein. Ich war skeptisch gegenüber den gelben Stoff innen, aber es macht es tatsächlich einfacher alles innen zu sehen, denn es dann so hell ist. Sehr robust und hat schon viele Regenstürme ausgehalten. Genial.

    Schöner Rucksack, lässt sich sehr einfach vorne am Brompton befestigen und es passt sehr viel hinein.
    Als Farbton habe ich beige/Tan gewählt, ich würde aber beim nächsten Kauf eher einen dunkleren Ton wählen, ich bin bei Wind und Wetter mit dem Brompton unterwegs und der Rucksack sieht etwas schmutzig aus, mit Wasser abgespielt, ist der Schmutz trotzdem leider nicht weg.
    Jederzeit würde ich mir aber sonst wieder einen Lumabag Rucksack kaufen, handgenäht aus recyceltem Materialien finde ich wunderbar🌞😁
