Portemonnaie Small is a compact wallet made from recycled sports equipment. Its leather comes off vaulting boxes and vaulting bucks, and the lining is cut from a retired gym mat. Across 16 by 10 centimetres it holds at least 10 cards, with coins behind a zip. Every piece is sewn in Bremen by Uwe Arndt, and the fastening is a reflector clasp.
A gym mat is the jumping and landing surface of school sport, and it would last almost forever. Wear starts at the edges. Dragging across the hall floor wears through the corners and edges, while the surface between them stays sound. Once the edges have worn through, the mat is retired. Uwe Arndt cuts the wallet lining out of that sound middle.
The vaulting box is built from stacked box sections, and the top one carries a leather hide. The outer shell of the wallet is cut from it. A vaulting buck is the smaller apparatus beside it, also covered in leather on top. Both pieces of apparatus wear down where hands and shoes land: at the corners and edges. Repaired spots are part of the deal, because a cover is often patched more than once in the hall before it is replaced. Since every piece of apparatus has its own history, colour and surface differ from wallet to wallet. The same leather appears on the seat cushion made from a gym mat, there at the corners.
Open it up and staggered card slots sit left and right, taking at least 10 cards. Across the middle runs a zip pocket for coins. Behind the card slots there is a larger pocket on each side. In the photos the mat lining is blue, it reaches across the whole interior, so opening the wallet brings the gym mat into view.

Shut, the Small measures approx. 16 cm in width and 10 cm in height. Depending on what it holds, it comes to one or two centimetres in thickness. Beside it in the Sport Edition stands the Portemonnaie Big at approx. 20 × 11 cm, with an additional pocket on the back. The difference is therefore one of format and fittings. On the Small, everything sits behind the flap and the back stays plain leather, framed by the seam that runs around it.

A reflector is the retroreflective element that throws incoming light back towards its source, and one of those sits in the frame of the clasp. Two colours are available, red and orange. The catches on school satchels of the seventies and eighties looked much the same. Beside it, the flap carries the embossed LUMABAG mark in the leather. Which colour is in stock at the moment shows in the variant picker.
Who is the Small the right size for?
Suited to anyone who carries cards and coins and prefers a flat format for them. If you regularly carry considerably more cards, go for the Big.
What fits inside, in cards and coins?
At least 10 cards. Staggered slots on the left and the right take them, and the coins go into the zip pocket in the middle.
Will my wallet look like the photo?
The photos show one example. Your leather comes from a different piece of apparatus and brings its own colour with it, so every wallet is a one-off.
When will the order arrive?
In approx. 2 to 3 weeks. Uwe Arndt returns to the sewing machine for each order, and shipping beyond Germany adds approx. 3 to 6 days.
