A 50 ml tin of reproofing wax

Wax for waxed cotton restores the coating that keeps the fabric of your LUMABAG bag water-repellent. The tin holds 50 ml and comes from Halley Stevensons. The wax is meant for the places that take more punishment than the rest: edges, corners, top panels and seams.

02

When the fabric needs more wax

The coating thins out first where a bag or backpack does its work: at edges, corners, top panels and seams. The tin holds 50 ml of reproofing wax, and with regular use it is needed once a year. The weather and the number of trips you make decide when the first coat is due. A few years are entirely possible.

03

Which LUMABAG products the wax is for

Waxed cotton goes into seven LUMABAG products: THE PRO, the QUER, the Brom-E, the MIMI, THE SHORTY, THE URBAN TRAVELLER and the Bromfort. The QUER and the Brom-E combine the waxed fabric with ECOPAK and Cordura, and the wax goes onto the waxed panels. Leather, gym mat and webbing make up the wallets, the seat cushion and the shoulder strap instead.

04

Getting the wax into the fabric

Rewaxing means a fresh coat of wax on the fabric. Have ready a container of hot water, a soft cloth or a sponge, and a warm room; a hot day outdoors works too. Brush off dirt and grit first, then sponge the fabric with cold water if it needs it. Stand the tin in the hot water until the wax turns almost liquid. Work it into the fabric with the cloth and rub it in rather than painting it on. Give seams, creases and dry patches your closest attention. As much wax as the fabric takes is enough. For a factory finish, blow the coat even with a hairdryer, after which the bag hangs overnight somewhere warm. Do the work in a well-ventilated space.

05

What harms waxed cotton

7 things wear the coating down: soap, detergents, solvents, machine washing, dry cleaning, an iron and a tumble dryer. Soap and detergents lift the wax out of the weave, which is why cold water and a brush are as far as cleaning goes. The tin stands in hot water; the fabric only ever meets cold water. An iron or a tumble dryer melts the coating instead of renewing it.

06

Who makes the wax

Halley Stevensons is the maker of the wax and produces waxed cotton fabrics. On handling, the manufacturer asks for three things. Keep the tin out of reach of children. Avoid contact with the eyes and prolonged contact with skin. Work in a well-ventilated space.

07

Still unsure before you rewax

Does the wax work on leather?

Waxed cotton only. LUMABAG wallets and seat cushions are made of leather and gym mat, so the tin stays closed for them.

Which spots need the wax?

Edges, corners, top panels and seams take more punishment than the rest, and the wax is meant for them.

How often is rewaxing needed?

A few years can pass before the first coat. With regular use, once a year is the recommended interval, though weather and use decide it.

How is the bag cleaned before waxing?

With a brush against dirt and grit, plus a sponge and cold water on stubborn spots. Soap and detergents stay away.
